Es handelt sich um eine philosophische Welterklarung, die der Weise Vasistha dem Konigssohn Rama darlegt. Die Hauptaussage lautet: Nichts, was als Objekt und als Subjekt der eigenen Erkenntnis erscheint, existiert tatsachlich, sondern alles ist nichts als Geist (cit). Ziel dieser didaktisch aufgebauten Unterweisung ist die Selbstbefreiung aus dem leidvollen Daseinskreislauf, die dem schon zu Lebzeiten Befreiten ein intentionslos-tatiges, leidfreies Leben in der Welt ermoglicht. Buch werden einige wichtige Elemente der Lehre vorab systematisch dargestellt. Des Weiteren werden Reflexionen zu der in der Unterweisung angewandten Methodik angestellt, die unter anderem darin besteht, in Form von Beispielen zu lehren.
