Description

Almost incomprehensibly, the spoken and written word has become part of the visual arts. Language and linguistic structures can be found in the works of many artists in the form of the side note, quotation, and record, or as an element of performances, videos, and sound installations. For the 2011/12 ars viva Prize, young artists were sought who deliberately and directly use language in their works or employ it as a theme. Erik Bünger (born 1976 in Växjö, Sweden), Philipp Goldbach (born 1978 in Cologne), and Juergen Staack (born 1978 in Doberlug-Kirchhain, Brandenburg) the three young artists selected, explore the border zones of linguistic possibilities in very different ways, reflecting upon access to language and forms of communication, while at the same time questioning methods of comprehension and presentation. This publication features the prize-winning works by these three young artists.
