Im Fokus der Betrachtung steht eine seit Jahrzehnten problematische regionale Geschichtskultur. Internationale Expertinnen und Experten aus Geschichtswissenschaft, Archäologie und Museologie untersuchen, wie aus militärischen Operationen zwischen September 1944 und Februar 1945 narrativ die »Schlacht im Hürtgenwald« konstruiert wurde. Die Beiträge analysieren die Mechanismen lokaler Geschichtsproduktion, von mythisierenden Opfernarrativen über apologetische Wehrmachtsdarstellungen bis zur systematischen Ausblendung von NS-Kontexten. Das innovative Konzept der Konfliktlandschaftsforschung macht sichtbar, wie sich materielle Überprägung und diskursive Bedeutungsproduktion wechselseitig bedingen. Der Band dokumentiert zugleich neue Vermittlungskonzepte und trägt zu einer demokratischen Erinnerungskultur bei, die sich ihrer Verantwortung für die kritische Aufarbeitung von Gewalt und Unrecht stellt.

This third volume intervenes critically in a regional memory culture characterized by problematic Wehrmacht apologetics and revisionist interpretations. International scholars from history, archaeology, and museum studies examine how military operations between September 1944 and February 1945 were narratively constructed as the "Battle of the Hürtgen Forest." The contributions analyze mechanisms of local history production, from mythologizing victim narratives to systematic exclusion of Nazi contexts. The innovative conflict landscape approach reveals how material transformations and discursive meaning-making mutually constitute each other. Based on interdisciplinary research at Osnabrück University, the contributions to the volume demonstrate how spaces become "battlefields" through language, narratives, and practices. It calls for a democratic memory culture that critically engages with violence and injustice, particularly urgent as authoritarian tendencies resurge.
