Während im Zuge von 1968 unter dem Einfluss marxistischer Theorie ein neues politisches Selbstverständnis der Kunstwissenschaft entstand, scheint sich seit den 1980er Jahren im deutschsprachigen Raum eine schleichende Entpolitisierung des Faches vollzogen zu haben. Zugleich sind in den letzten Jahren zahlreiche Forschungsansätze zu verzeichnen, die teils implizit, teils explizit auf marxistische Konzepte zurückgreifen. Vor diesem Hintergrund richtet der vorliegende Band den Blick auf Traditions- und Fluchtlinien marxistischer Theorie in der Kunstwissenschaft. Die Autor:innen analysieren dieses Verhältnis aus historischer und fachgeschichtlicher Perspektive, vor allem aber mit Blick auf sein Potential für eine zeitgenössische politische Kunstwissenschaft.

Whereas the momentum of 1968 and the influence of Marxist theory created a new political self-understanding of art studies, it seems that a sneaking depoliticisation of the discipline has taken place in German-speaking countries since the 1980s. At the same time, in recent years various research approaches have emerged which both implicitly and explicitly draw back on Marxist concepts. Taking this into account, the present volume examines the traditions and trajectories of Marxist theory in art studies. The authors analyse this relationship from both historic and historical perspectives by focussing on its potential for contemporary political art studies.
