In his work on the Old Testament, Friedhelm Hartenstein impressively combines the art of a text-oriented, interdisciplinary, and hermeneutically reflective interpretation of biblical texts in their changing historical and cultural contexts. The contributions to this Festschrift, published on the occasion of the celebrant's 65th birthday, reflect the breadth of interests and the broad perspective that characterize Friedhelm Hartenstein's oeuvre. From the perspective of the various disciplines of theology, philosophy, and historical cultural studies, they reflect on the hermeneutical process of interpreting religious traditions against the background of their respective historical and cultural contexts and engage in dialogue with contemporary philosophical and cultural studies concepts of interpretation. In doing so, they take up the conversation with the celebrant, continue it, and in their own way contribute to a text-oriented interpretation of the Old Testament in the context of its enduring significance in current discourses in church, theology, and society.
