Description

Star gooseberry (Phyllanthus acidus) is belongs to family Phyllanthaceae. The genus name Phyllanthus is derived from Greek words meaning leaf-flower, an allusion to the apparent bearing of flowers on the leaves. The species name acidus is on account of the acidity of the fruit. The tree usually flowers and produces fruit twice a year. It has been widely distributed and is variously known in different country. Thai people believe that a Mayom tree (Star Gooseberry) planted in front of the house will bring fame and success. The plant is a good remedy for different types of ailments. The plant is considered as an ornamental plant. Star gooseberry is often propagated through seeds and cuttings. Seeds having very low germination percentage thus cuttings are recommended to produce true-to-type plants.
