English summary: The universal worth of human rights is still a matter of dispute. Can an idea whose fundamental principles evolved on the horizon of the European Enlightenment and which is based on the Judeo-Christian and antique concept of a dignity common to all be accepted world-wide? The fact that the concept of human rights claims universal validity on the one hand and that it originated in Western legal culture on the other makes it predestined to be an obvious source of controversy. Is there a way out of this dilemma? The contributors to this collection of essays deal with these fundamental questions from a sociological and ethical perspective, discuss individual demands of human rights and also the boundaries of the idea of human rights and its applicability.
