Im Mittelpunkt dieses Bandes steht die Ekklesiologie des russisch- bzw. amerikanisch-orthodoxen Theologen Alexander Schmemann. Der Autor untersucht sie im Rahmen ihrer Zeit und in ihren ökumenischen Bezügen und zeigt ihr Potential, zwischen hierarchisch orientierten und kongregationalistischen Ekklesiologien zu vermitteln. Er zeigt den Bezug zwischen sakramentaler Wandlung und Transformation von Kultur durch die Präsenz der Kirche, wodurch die Grundlagen für Schmemanns missionarisch-transformativem Verständnis von Kirche deutlich werden. Schmemanns Kritik an der Identifikation der Orthodoxie in Amerika mit der Subkultur der russischen Emigration erweist sich so als höchst relevant für heutige gesellschaftliche, ökologische und ökonomische Problemstellungen im Rahmen der zunehmenden Globalisierung.
Schmemanns Denken wurde in Nordamerika in den vergangenen Jahren ökumenisch breit rezipiert und spielt im Wiederaufbau des theologischen Lehrbetriebs im post-sowjetischen Russland eine große Rolle, fand im deutschen Sprachraum bisher aber kaum Beachtung - eine Lücke, die der Autor zu schließen sucht.

The author explores the theological foundations of Alexander Schmemanns vision of the world as sacrament. He argues that Schmemann's work should not be approached by focusing on definition and method of liturgical theology alone but that the theological pillars upon which his vision of the liturgy as transformation of the world rests ought to be clarified. He then discusses the importance of time in Schmemann's eschatological ecclesiology; the unfolding of Schmemann's understanding of symbol and the dependency of the world; and how these foundations shape the transformative presence of the church in a given culture. Thus Braeker demonstrates the importance of the missiological aspect of Schmemann's theology. In addition, he shows that in his later years, Schmemann tends to accentuate the eschatological ulteriority of the Church. This emphasis prevents him from spelling out as to how the church is to bear witness, beyond liturgical celebration, to its own reality. Nevertheless, Schmemann's ecclesiology sheds light on the correlation of liturgy and mission, a potential that in the wider ecumenical context still remains to be discovered.
