It is March of 1883, and it's been nearly four years since Annie Fuller Dawson began her adventures in solving mysteries. In that first case, she went undercover as a servant in the Voss household to discover who killed the head of the family, Matthew Voss. To her surprise, she is once again being pulled into the affairs of this family in order to solve a mystery. And once again, it is the wise elderly gentleman, Mr. Wong, who comes to the rescue.
Chronologically, the events in this novella come after the novella, Dandy and the Dognappers. While it can be read as a stand-alone, it also reintroduces a number of characters from Maids of Misfortune, the first novel in the Victorian San Francisco Mystery series.
