Henry Nelson Wieman (1884-1975) was the leading member of the group of religious naturalists associated with the University of Chicago. Beginning in the Twenties, members of this group worked out the religious implications of a wholly naturalistic view of reality. With striking originality, Wieman transformed the influence of John Dewey and Alfred North Whitehead into his «naturalistic theism, » the vision of the divine as an immanent and finite creativity at work within the evolving universe. These critical essays reveal the problems in Wieman's quest for a naturalistic interpretation of the reality of God.
