Doc Thorson and state investigator Jane Benton set out alone together to explore multiple suicides and catastrophes at an isolated village in West Virginia. But a horrifying attack points to the return of a creature called Gall Farraneagh. According to local legend, he can be appeased only by human blood, and only that torn from women and girls. The village's long-time protector takes strong measures to rescue and educate Jane, and he takes a strong dislike to Doc Thorson. At first, it seems that Doc is merely the object of unfair prejudice against outsiders, but then the facts start to come out. Doc has been in this village before, and catastrophe resulted. Meanwhile, Senior State Investigator Frank McKenna is on the way with a Ford Bronco full of triangulation equipment, and four of Doc's high school students. Horror and mystery combine in a tale of sorrow, arrogance, persecution, as well as courage, personal integrity, and perseverence.
