Born in Albany in 1944, Les Bail grew up in a household that valued integrity, hard work and practical skill. Never academically inclined, he found his strengths early through hands-on work, completing a carpentry and joinery apprenticeship before establishing a long and successful career in building and contracting.

Les's entrepreneurial drive saw him found Drive-in Timber & Salvage and later Southcoast Diving Supplies, combining construction expertise with a passion for diving, salvage and maritime heritage. These diverse skills converged unexpectedly following the tragic death of whaling station manager John Bell in 1996. With no succession plan in place, Les agreed to assist temporarily—an arrangement that evolved into more than thirteen years of leadership.

As General Manager of the former Albany whaling station, Les oversaw its transformation from a neglected industrial site into Discovery Bay, an award-winning heritage tourism precinct of national significance. His work extended beyond buildings to landscape, biodiversity and education, culminating in the development of the Albany Biodiversity Park, featuring wildlife exhibits, wetlands and community spaces.

Throughout his life, Les contributed tirelessly to his community, serving in leadership roles across tourism, photography, maritime heritage and regional development organisations. Recognition followed through life memberships, national honours and heritage awards, yet his greatest achievement remains tangible: places that continue to educate, inspire and serve the public.
