Romantiker sind Menschen, die an eine höchste Wahrheit und ein Lebensziel glauben, beides aber noch nicht gefunden haben. Deshalb bleiben sie in Bewegung. So hat es Novalis formuliert: "Wir suchen überall das Unbedingte, und finden immer nur Dinge." Aus dieser zentralen Idee wird die Romantik erklärt: als Epoche, die um 1800 beginnt und deren Impulse bis in die Gegenwart fortwirken; als Bewegung, die in der Literatur stattfindet, aber auch andere Künste und die Lebenspraxis ergreift; mit einem Schwerpunkt in der deutschen, aber Seitenblicken in die englische und amerikanische Kultur. Am Beginn dieser Einführung stehen Wohngemeinschaften in Berlin, Jena und Heidelberg, nach der Erklärung ihrer zündenden Idee folgen Kapitel zum "Romantisieren" des eigenen Lebens, zu romantischen Bildern und zur Ironie, sodann geht es um politische Romantik, um Liebe und zuletzt auch um die Schattenseiten der Romantik, um Ziellosigkeit und Depression.Romantics are people who believe in a supreme truth and a goal in life, but have not yet found both. Therefore they keep moving. As Novalis put it: "We look for the unconditional everywhere, and always find only things." Romanticism is explained from this central idea: as an epoch that begins around 1800 and whose impulses continue to have an effect up to the present; as a movement that primarily informs literature, but also takes hold of other arts and even the practice of life; with an emphasis on German, but side glances into English and American culture. This introduction begins with residential communities in Berlin, Jena, and Heidelberg, followed by chapters on "romanticizing" one's own life, romantic images, and irony, then political romanticism, love, and finally the dark sides of romanticism, aimlessness and depression.
