A body is found in an otherwise serene wildlife refuge. A man has been murdered. Another goes missing. Then another. In the aftermath, a small and secretive group begins to investigate, not anticipating the maze of lies they will discover.

North Carolina's Outer Banks have always attracted dreamers, adventurers, pirates, and explorers. And trouble followed them. For centuries, the islands have been watched over by a covert society, the Brethren of the Coast. Founded as an organization to regulate pirates and buccaneers, the experiment collapsed but the Brethren persisted in secret. They've remained hidden, placing themselves between the people of the Banks and those who would harm them.

The islands are awash in legend and mystery, and whether they are called to solve simple crimes or mysteries dating back to the earliest days on the Banks, the Brethren assume risks so their neighbors can live in peace.

With their numbers now dwindling, the Brethren need new blood, while also answering calls about mysterious orbs and a suspected smuggling ring. And the murder that may tie it all together.
