Sofia Mitsola (born 1992, lives in London) paints childlike women, nymphs, sirens, and sphinxes who, often in cycladic settings, coquettishly and confidently revel in their sensuality. Men are absent from this fantasy realm; there's only sisterly companionship. Far removed from worldly doom and "unshackled from the tradition, gaze, and demands of the male," Mitsola's modern mythical characters celebrate a free and spontaneous sexuality. Inspired by, among other things, Japanese animation, ballet, and ancient Greek sculpture, the artist creates poetic stages and spaces for escape that entice us to explore our own thresholds between sensory perception and fantasy. This richly illustrated volume includes a captivating conversation with Mitsola as well as an insightful essay by Alyce Mahon.
