Description

In the early 1900's, the country schools of Mud Bridge, Bryn Tawa, Maple Grove, Mudsock, White Haven, Huffman, Smith, McClain, Wildcat, Rushmore, Rimer, and Vaughnsville were the educational centers of Sugar Creek Township in Putnam County of Ohio. Local families started small one-room schools for a few families together. Roads had been build and ditches dug beside many of the roads in the Township to provide drainage. One interesting road was Bryn Tawa where the ditch ran along the west side of the road, crossed beneath the road and then ran on the east side of the road. There was a country school called Bryn Tawa, also, that stood to the west of the road and back in the uncleared woods . Bryn Tawa was a combination of Welsh and Indian that meant 'by the waters'.

In 1902 an acredited high school was begun in Vaughnsville. Soon the country schools were centralized in just the two township locations of Rimer and Vaughnsville with transportation provided by horse drawn school buses.
