He was born Aurelius Augustinus in the year 354, and eventually became bishop of Hippo Regius, in northern Africa, and a Doctor of the Church. Since then, reviews of St. Augustine's writings regularly spark controversy. But he remains immensely influential, making major contributions to both Western Christianity and philosophy. Yet, his Confessions are more than another treatise on theology. In this autobiographical work, we see the drama of human spiritual development, from the foolish decadence of youth, to the wisdom that results from a persistent focus on Truth.
