"Let go of me" I demanded again, my voice trembling slightly.

Slamming the heavy door shut behind him with a resounding crash that echoed through the silent hallway, Killian propelled me further into the room, still retaining his painful grip on my hand.

Maybe it was also the overwhelming, soul-crushing embarrassment of being dragged through the party like a misbehaving animal in front of what felt like the entire population of New York's underworld. Anyway, I could feel the unwelcome prickle of tears threatening to spill.

He finally released my hand, his fingers abruptly unclenching, as if the very touch of me disgusted him.

He shook his head slowly, rubbing his palm roughly all over his face in a gesture of raw anger, his other hand clenching into a fist, resting on his waist, his posture radiating barely controlled fury. He scowled, his features contorted in a mask of rage.

"What were you even doing at this party in the first place?" he continued, his voice rising again, the shout returning. "You shouldn't be there. You are supposed to be working. You have no business being at my party."

"I was having some… fun" I retorted, the word tasting bitter in my mouth, a hollow mockery of the evening's earlier, fleeting moments of enjoyment.

When I opened my mouth, fully intending to launch into a furious defense of my actions, to unleash the torrent of anger and humiliation that was boiling within me, he preempted me again, cutting me off before I could utter a single syllable.

"You don't—" I shot back, my voice trembling with rage.

"Oh, but I do, darling" he interrupted, his voice suddenly dropping, plummeting to a dangerously low tone, a chillingly smooth whisper that was far more terrifying than his earlier shouting. Fury, raw and untamed, flashed and flickered like lightning behind the storm clouds of his eyes. "I own you."
