Description

The present book - prepared in co-operation with the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University Institute of Archaeology, Lublin - is a follow-up to the publication issued in 2018, discussing the results of archaeological research on the stronghold and settlement complex in Gródek upon the Bug River, identified with early medieval Volhyn' - one of the most important centers of the Polish-Ruthenian borderland. The book is dedicated to early medieval and post-medieval pottery finds acquired during excavations carried out in Gródek in the years 1952-1955. The authors focus on analyzing the technological, formal, and decorative features of vessels. They also examine their chronology and stylistic and cultural affiliations, indicating solid ties between the settlement complex and the material culture of Western Rus' territories. Two annexes - a discussion of the results of laboratory analyzes of pottery and a presentation of an interesting set of early medieval vessels from the oven discovered in Gródek in 2018 - constitute a necessary complement to the book.Individual analyses are the result of an international co-operation of researchers within project The Golden Apple of Polish archaeology. Stronghold complexes at Czermno and Gródek (Cherven' Towns) - chronology and function in the light of past and current research, part 2, Finalisation of documentation works (Ministry of Sciences and Higher Education, Warsaw/Poland; National Programme for the Development of the Humanities; project No. 11H 18 0344 86) and the scientific activity of Department I (Man and Environment) of Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO).
