When a Modoc rancher's cattle vanish overnight, the note he owes the local gambler comes due. Within days he is accused of train robbery, with the sheriff in the gambler's pocket and the noose tightening fast.
Out of the night ride two saddle-tramps with a knack for trouble - a long, lean Texan whose hunches always run true and his short, square-jawed sidekick. They drift into Modoc looking for nothing more than a hot meal and a soft bed, and ride straight into a frame-up that reaches from the saloon roulette wheel to the express car of the eastbound train.
Before the dust settles there will be a holdup, a posse hunt across broken hills, a stolen letter that says more than its writer intended, and one quiet showdown in a town that thought it had bought every gun on its side.
