Description

He knows what you're thinking before you do. He knows what you're afraid of before you feel it. What he doesn't know — what he has never been allowed to know — is himself.

Ezra Boone can read minds. Not metaphorically. Not intuitively. Actually. Every room he enters becomes a chorus of exposed wants and buried fears, and he has spent his entire adult life weaponizing that knowledge — as an investigative journalist, as a covert vigilante known only as Eclipse, as a man who manages every human relationship with the precision of a surgeon and the distance of a ghost.

He tells himself it makes him better at protecting people.

He's lying. And somewhere beneath the noise of six million minds, he knows it.

When a dead source leaves behind a single cryptic code word — ORACLE — Ezra begins pulling at a thread that unravels everything. What emerges from the dark is not the intelligence scandal he expected. It's something far more intimate, far more devastating: evidence that his powers were never a mutation. Never an accident. That decades before he was born, the program that would become the most powerful private intelligence organization in Europe had already chosen him. Designed him. Built into his neural architecture the very capacity for empathy he calls his conscience — not because they wanted to create a hero, but because they needed a weapon that wouldn't go feral.

The villain waiting at the end of this investigation is silver-haired and genuinely warm, and he makes an argument Ezra cannot dismiss: You already do what I do. You just tell yourself a prettier story about it.

He's not entirely wrong.

Set across near-future Berlin, Cairo, Tokyo, and Paris, The Weight of Knowing is a psychological thriller that uses the architecture of the superhero genre to ask questions the genre almost never dares: What does it cost to know what other people are thinking — really, actually, constantly? What happens to a person who was built to be a weapon and raised to believe he was a man? And if your capacity for compassion was engineered into you as a safeguard, does that make it less real?

This is not a story about saving the world. The world gets saved along the way, but that's almost incidental.

This is a story about a man who discovers he cannot trust the source of his own convictions — and what he chooses to do with that knowledge in the dark, when no one is watching, when the armor he has worn his entire life finally comes off.

If you've ever asked whether a manufactured conscience is still a conscience, this novel will not give you an easy answer. It will give you the only honest one.

For readers of John le Carré's moral complexity, Max Barry's corporate-dystopia dread, and the psychological intimacy of literary superhero fiction at its most unsparing.
