In 2013, art historian Artur Rosenauer made the most important Titian discovery in decades: an early and previously unknown painting, The Risen Christ, probably commissioned by a religious community when the artist was in his early twenties. An Early Masterpiece offers a concise account of the work's provenance: It was in the possession over time by both the Grimanis, one of the most illustrious patrician families in Venice, and by German Chancellor Bernhard Heinrich von Bülow before it was acquired by its present owners. Astonishingly well-preserved, the painting shows a young Christ standing on the lid of his sealed tomb. His left hand holds the flag of the resurrection, while his right arm is raised in blessing. The details of the painting--especially the dramatic Easter morning sky--demonstrate the genius with which Titian exploited light and color in his work.
