As if she'd read my mind, Leila rested her chin in her palm and gazed at me. 

I had to ignore the shiny pink covering on her delicate human nails or we'd end up talking about that instead and I might never be brave enough to turn back to this deeply sensitive topic.

"I never wanted to pry into your personal life, but I've always wondered. Why did you come here? I kind of assumed you wanted a break from whatever your usual culture is, or maybe from pressure to do exactly what we're talking about."

She laughed and finished her grape juice before going on.

"That's one reason I left home, to be honest. Before you ask, it's a long story, and I'm much happier here. I'll tell you someday if you want, when you've got lots of time to listen."

"I don't suppose you'll let me get away with saying the same?" 

I smiled and did the best I could with a wink, which isn't all that easy when your eyes mainly close to keep themselves safe from burrowing through the earth. I'd had to practice the correct timing and duration for closing, staying closed, and opening again for quite a while.
