Starting college in the tumultuous 1970's, Marta grapples with the political and moral upheaval around her. Raised by secular Holocaust survivors who never fully embraced American culture, she longs for something to believe in - something on which to center her life.
She forges connections with new people, starting with her dorm mate, Sally, hoping they'll lead her to a more meaningful life. Lost and wandering, Marta's search takes her from college in Massachusetts, to hippie communes in Oregon, and eventually to unexpected answers in Montana.
Meanwhile her college roommate, Sally, who thought she had all the answers, escapes an abusive marriage only to spiral into serious addictions. In the dark years which follow, she loses custody of her young daughter. After years of struggles, her path too, ends in Montana.
